Sovalye Island
Şövalye Island is a picturesque and tranquil island located just off the coast of Fethiye, in the Muğla province of southwestern Turkey. Also known historically as Megri Island or Fethiye Island, this narrow, elongated landmass nearly closes off the entrance to the Gulf of Telmessos, serving for centuries as a natural barrier that sheltered Fethiye Harborfrom harsh weather and strong sea currents.
What sets Şövalye Island apart is that it is the only inhabited island in the surrounding area. Geographically, it is bordered by Kızıl Island to the west, Çalış Beach to the east, the town of Fethiye to the south, and the open Fethiye Gulf to the north—making it a uniquely positioned destination with spectacular views in every direction.
Today, the island is a hidden gem for both local and international visitors. It offers a peaceful escape with a variety of boutique hotels, charming restaurants, serene beaches, and designated picnic areas, making it an ideal getaway, even during the hottest days of summer. The refreshing Mediterranean breeze offers natural comfort and a pleasant atmosphere that draws visitors seeking relaxation and tranquility.
Access to the island is easy and enjoyable. Small boats regularly depart from Fethiye’s waterfront, offering a scenic short journey to the island. During the summer months, scheduled sea bus services operate between 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM, providing convenient transportation to and from the island, which is only 1.5 nautical miles away from the mainland.
Due to its strategic location, overlooking the northern entrance of Fethiye Harbor, Şövalye Island has held military and navigational importance throughout history. In recent years, it has become increasingly popular as a destination for vacation stays, day trips, and even private property investment, thanks to its blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and modern amenities.
Whether you’re looking for a quiet retreat, a romantic escape, or a scenic day out on the water, Şövalye Island offers a unique blend of history, nature, and leisure—just minutes from the heart of Fethiye.
